U.S. Military Confirms Iranian Seizure of Oil Tanker Near Hormuz

June 22, 2025 – Gulf Region Desk

On Wednesday night, the U.S. Central Command confirmed that Iranian forces seized an oil tanker near international waters off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The operation reportedly involved two Iranian naval vessels and a Sea King military helicopter.

The U.S. released video footage showing an Iranian helicopter hovering above a large oil tanker named "Wila." According to U.S. military sources and official tweets, Iranian forces boarded the Liberian-flagged vessel in a swift maritime operation.

Tracking Data Confirms Vessel Location

According to vessel-tracking site Refinitiv, the Wila is an oil tanker currently anchored near the port of Khor Fakkan in the UAE. Satellite data and AIS tracking confirm its route passed through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global oil shipments.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the Iranian forces eventually released the vessel without confrontation. “The U.S. Navy observed the situation from a distance but did not intervene,” the official added.

Arms Embargo Debate at the U.N.

This maritime incident comes amid growing diplomatic tension over the U.S. push to extend the arms embargo on Iran. The embargo is set to expire in October 2025 under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Iran and six world powers.

The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, previously withdrew from the deal in 2018, branding it “the worst deal ever.” Since then, Washington has been pushing to reimpose broader sanctions, including the arms ban.

However, both China and Russia—key allies of Iran and permanent members of the U.N. Security Council—have opposed the U.S. proposal and may use their veto power to block the resolution.

Strategic Implications

The incident highlights the increasing risks of military escalation in the Gulf region. Analysts warn that any miscalculation near the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-third of global oil passes, could lead to a broader regional crisis.

The Pentagon has yet to issue an official statement on whether it plans to enhance its naval presence in the area in response to the Iranian move.
